Bane

Bane

Nobody understood him.

But it wasn’t like that was a bad thing.  No, it wasn’t a bad thing.  In fact, he preferred it that way.  It gave him a sense of satisfaction – knowing that he was on a plane that was far above the others’.  He relished it, the thought that people couldn’t get him.

They labeled him ‘crazy’.

They were wrong.

“Dr. Surya, don’t be distressed.  I am different.  That is true, but do not let it bother you.”

He was sane – he was perfectly sane.  He knew himself better than anyone else knew themselves.  He always – always – knew what he was doing.  Everything, every little action of his, had a purpose.  He was a demi-god, with “Demi-” being the key word.  No, he wasn’t a god yet.  He deserved to be one, though.

This cowering piece of human before him was clearly a testament to his claim to godhood.

“Now go on, doctor, give me the keys.”

He cocked his gun to the side, giving his captive a silent reminder of the hold he had on his life.  Indeed, a gun to the head was just like a stranglehold on the throat, only better, because it was easier to maintain.

Though, he had to admit, he still preferred the latter.  There was nothing quite like the feel of a bounding pulse before it withers, weakens, and finally…disappears.

The doctor hesitated, apparently quite willful, but eventually relented.

“Good.  And the keys to your car?”

By this time, the doctor had all but given up.  The keys were handed over to him without much ceremony – none of the hesitation, only abject resignation.

He loved it.

He took a deep breathe, taking in the scent of isopropyl alcohol, medicine, and latex gloves all at once.  It would be the last whiff he would get of the Asylum, he would make sure of that.

“Thank you, Dr. Surya.” He said, bowing politely. “It was a pleasure doing business with you.”

He slid down from the examination table, slipped his feet into the hospital-issued slippers, and went on his way.  He was planning his escape route in his head, wordlessly scanning the blueprints he had memorized, taken into heart before he even entered the said institution before he realized – surely, he couldn’t go out into the world clad only in his standard-issue uniform.  No, he had to wear something better.  After all, he had to fix the world.  He had to fix its consistencies, make it as ‘sane’ as he was.

Wordlessly, he turned around to face the doctor once again.

“Doc, I need some clothes”, he said, gun at the ready.  After all, what better outfit to wear when fixing the world than a doctor’s frock?

Kannan and Ratha (Tamil Short Story)

Kannan and Ratha

Kannan and Ratha are childhood sweethearts that have promised to remain faithful to one another for as long as they both shall live.  Theirs is a match made in heaven.  Their parents have been friends for a long time, and they have accepted the fact that, someday, their children will get married and start a family of their own.

Anyone who sees them would think that they are two people very much in love with each other.  Their friends can only hope they will one day find a love that was as true and lasting as theirs.

Little did anyone suspect that their relationship will go through something very painful and tragic.  You see, Ratha recently sought the help of their family doctor because her headaches have become frequent, and she can hardly get up from bed every time she had one of her headaches.

She didn’t tell anyone that she went to see the doctor, not even Kannan knew.  This morning, she found out that her headaches were caused by a tumor they found inside her head.  Until they open her up, they will never know her chances of survival.

“Why now?  Why is this happening to me?”  She cried out.  “Please don’t let me die!”  She pleaded.

How will she tell her parents what was going on?  How can she break her lover’s heart with this very sad news?  As these questions run through her mind, she knew that she had to face the truth sooner or later.  She knew she had to tell them.  She had to prepare them for what could happen after the operation.

She prepared a sumptuous feast one evening, and she invited both her family and Kannan’s family for dinner.  She wanted to tell them together.  They deserved to know.  After dinner that night, she broke the bad news.  Everyone was in shock.  Her parents were inconsolable, as was Kannan and his family.

“We will fight this!”  Her parents determinedly said.

Kannan, on the other hand, simply took her in his arms and cried.

“I can’t bear losing you!”  He whispered as he was hugging her.

Ratha put on a brave face and told them everything will be all right.  That had been six months ago.  This afternoon, everyone will gather once more just like on the evening that she cooked for them.  Later, they will bury her and hold on to the thought that they will all be together again someday.

Waiting for Love ( Tamil Short Story )

Waiting for Love

Kavitha and Kanthan were childhood best friends, but now that they’re both teenagers, they have drifted apart, each with their own circle of friends who are as different as day and night.

One day, Muthu, best friend of Kanthan, asked Kavitha out, and she agreed.  And one date led to another that, pretty soon, Muthu and Kavitha were now considered a couple.

Kanthan never thought anything about his childhood best friend going out with his new best friend.  He was, in fact, glad that Muthu found a real lady for a girlfriend.  And anyway, he and Kavitha no longer have anything in common, save for some childhood memories that were forgotten already.

It was during the prom night though that his opinion about the two changed.  Kavitha was dressed exquisitely in a lovely gown the color of the softest pink, her curly hair up with wavy tendrils cascading down the sides of her face and nape.  It was then that Kanthan realized how much Kavitha has grown.  She has no longer the girl in pigtails with snoot running down her nose.  She was this beautiful woman that literally took his breath away.  He resisted the ugly horns of jealousy as he saw Muthu and Kavitha dancing together, so Kanthan turned away.

From then on, Kanthan avoided the couple, in fear that Muthu might recognize what Kanthan is starting to feel for Kavitha.  But one night, Muthu had a terrible accident that left him in a coma.  They were told that Muthu might never wake up again.

He stayed by his best friend’s side, giving moral support to Muthu and his family, but throughout the ordeal, he was battling his own battle as Kavitha was always there, holding on to Muthu’s hand and crying helpless tears at the sad fate of her boyfriend.  But his resolve not to get involved with her finally melted as he touched her shoulder comfortingly.  She turned to Kanthan and wept bitter tears, which promptly melted his heart and made him love her more.  But, of course, he will never betray Muthu’s trust in him.  He will be her friend, he said, just a friend.

At midnight the next day, Muthu passed away.  His family and friends cried for their loss, especially Kavitha.  Kanthan had no choice but to comfort Kavitha during her grieving, who was very distraught.  Their relationship went on like that for months, Kanthan being the shoulders she could cry on.  One day, Kanthan can no longer endure not telling her, so he gathered the courage to tell her how he feels.  Kavitha listened, astonishment in her eyes then finally tenderness and remembrance.

“I’ve always loved you, Kanthan,” she admitted, “But please wait, wait for me.  I’m not yet ready.”

Kanthan, heart singing in joy, said, “I’ll wait.”

AnbuChelvam

AnbuChelvam

AnbuChelvam is a hardworking man.  Every morning he would wake up as soon as the rooster starts to crow.  He liked starting his day early and working on his farm when everyone else is still fast asleep.  He lived a simple life.  After breakfast, he would feed the chickens in the coop, and he would let the cows out in the field to graze.

He stopped working at noon to have lunch and a little siesta.  In the afternoons, he would go to his neighbor’s house to help him with his chores because the old man had already lost his eyesight due to a rare kind of fever he had years ago.

Everyone in the neighborhood admired and respected AnbuChelvam.  All the girls swooned over him, and all the men wanted to be friends with him.  He was always ready to help whoever came to him, and on more than one occasion, he had offered his home to visitors who came to his town for business or pleasure.

Kind, generous, industrious not to mention good looking, that’s AnbuChelvam in a nutshell.  But he wasn’t always like that.  He used to be a rich, worldly man who didn’t care about anyone else except himself.  He had a wife and a little boy.  He had been married for eight years when he came to this town he now calls home.

He didn’t pay much attention to his family.  He took for granted that they would always be there.  But he lost them in a tragic fire, one night while he wasn’t home.

“If only I’d come home early, I could have saved them.”  He would often say to himself.  Instead, he had been drinking in a local bar with his colleagues.  When he got home, he saw fire trucks and police cars, and his heart stopped.  That was five years ago.  He never talked about them.  No one knew about his past.

No one knew that he had been a monster who let his family die because of his selfishness.  He could never forgive himself for what he did to his loving wife and his precious little boy.  The ghost from his past will forever haunt him.

Yet, no one knew about the other AnbuChelvam who left his old life to start anew in some place among strangers.  All they saw was a hardworking man who was always kind to everyone and who kept to himself most of the time.

Among the Stars

Among the Stars

Kala lost her husband when she was only two months pregnant with their first child.  They had been married for a year when they found out she was pregnant.  They have been waiting for this precious one to come into their lives, and Kajan was just so thrilled when they found out.

He met a car accident on his way to work one morning.  The doctors couldn’t save him.  It’s been four years since that fateful morning.  Aravin, their little boy born just months after his death, is now almost four years old, and he’s starting to ask about his father.

She hurts every time he asks about his father.  How can she make him understand about death and heaven?  His little heart is aching for a father and she couldn’t give him that.  One night, as she was tucking him to bed, Aravin asked about his daddy once again.

“Mommy, why don’t I have a daddy?  Where is he?”

“Little one, do you see the stars up in the sky?  Can you see the brightest and the biggest one?”

“Yes.”

“That one is your father.  He went up to heaven so he can watch over us.  Every time you see the brightest and biggest star twinkling, he is telling you that he loves you.  He wants you to be brave and strong so that someday, when it is your turn to go to heaven, you will be as bright and big as him.”

“Okay, mommy.  I will always look at the stars whenever I want to see my daddy.”

Thankfully, Aravin seemed satisfied with what she had told him about his father.  Silently, she whispered a prayer to her husband, asking him to continue helping her raise their child and to always watch over him to keep him safe.

Kala knows that the road she will need to traverse is still long and sometimes there would be bumps and obstacles.  But knowing, too, that her husband will always protect them and will be watching them as they go through life gives her the strength to keep on being the best mother in the world for their son.

Someday, she knows that they will all be together again, and father and son will finally meet.  But until then, she promises to lead a virtuous and happy life for the sake of her little Aravin – her little one who will keep looking up in the sky because he knows his father is among the stars.

A Wife’s Last Gift

A Wife’s Last Gift

Ram wanted to tell Fritha that their relationship was no longer working for him and that he already found someone new. But how to tell her?  Will she understand?  Furthermore, will she ever forgive him for being unfaithful after he has promised that there will be no one else in his heart, but Fritha alone?  Then he asked himself, “How can I abandon her when she needs me the most?  I can’t leave her like this.  But I love Neha, and Neha loves me.”

He remembered the day he met Neha.  He was going to the pharmacy to buy some medicines that Fritha needs.  Neha, on her way out of the door, bumped into him, which sent the things she bought flying.  Out came the snacks and vitamins, the latest Vogue magazine, and the pregnancy kit.  Embarrassed, she knelt down and began gathering them quickly.  Ram also knelt down and helped her gather the items.  Their hands touched accidentally as they both reached for the pregnancy kit.  He withdrew his hand and looked into her face quickly, surprised to see tears gathering in her eyes.  Then his surprise turned to shock as more tears came that finally she was crying earnestly.  He helped her stand up and said when he saw the crowd gathering and staring at them, “Do you want to go to that mini-restaurant across the street where you could have some privacy?”

Neha nodded meekly and allowed him to lead her across the street.  She didn’t know what came over her, but she began to tell him her whole story, how her boyfriend dumped her when she told him she thinks she might be pregnant with his child.  Then he also told her his story, about Fritha, how much he loves his wife.

From then on, they became good friends and trusted confidants.  And then friendship blossomed into romance until they found themselves in each other’s arms one night, kissing like they’ve always been lovers.  They kept their relationship to themselves, but Ram’s guilt kept niggling at him.  Fritha, it says constantly.  What about Fritha?

Now, as he looks down on the bed where his wife rests, he cried out, “Tell me what to do, Fritha?  I love you so much, but I can’t bear this anymore!”

As if answering his heartfelt question, the machine that monitors Fritha’s heart suddenly flat-lined, loud beeping came out of it.  Doctors pushed him aside as they begin to resuscitate Fritha, but Fritha finally let go of the tentative hold she has on life.

Fritha, till her last dying breath, loved her husband enough to let him go on with his life, guilt-free to be with the woman he now loves.  At least, she can go to her death knowing that somebody will take care of her husband now that she’s gone.

“Free.  You’re free to love,” Ram heard the whispered words in the wind as Fritha finally rests forever with a smile on her peaceful face.

Young Love (Tamil Short story )

Young Love:

When Siva and his friends would reminisce about their high school days, there Tamil Young Lovewas one particular girl that he’d always remember. The memory of her would always bring a smile to his face and, often, his heart would flutter the same way it did the first time that he met her.

It’s true what they say, you never forget a first love and a first kiss no matter how old you get or how much you love your current lover, wife or partner. He could still remember how soft her hair felt or how smooth her skin was under his touch. Everything was still fresh in his mind as if it was all just yesterday.

They parted ways because their young minds couldn’t cope with their strong feelings for one another. Everything was so intense, and this got confusing for both of them, which resulted in them fighting all the time.

He now understands what happened before, but during that time, all they both knew was that the fights were just too much and their feelings for each other were just hard to bear for their young hearts.

Siva is divorced now. His wife found someone else. He was surprised how calmly he took the news. He thought he was going to fight tooth and nail with her, but surprisingly, he took the news lightly, and they ended their 10-year marriage amicably for the sake of the children.

His solitude is what would often trigger memories of his young love.

“Where is she now? My sweet Gopika.”

Gopika, for her part, never found anyone she would want to marry, so she stayed single and enjoyed life as much as she could. But there would be times when she’d get a little lonely and long for someone to love. Once in awhile, she did think of Siva but only with fond memories.

They never personally got in touch after high school, but common friends would often give them news about the other; and Gopika was saddened by the news of his recent divorce. She considered calling him up to check how he was doing but she didn’t want him to think that she had been thinking about him all this time.

Lost in their own thoughts and their own lives, they could only hope to run into each other one day and just pick up where they left off; each hoping that their young love is, after all, the true love they have been destined for.

A Little Push Can Help ( Tamil Short Story)

A Little Push Can Help

“Karthik, I don’t think I can do this.”

Karthik sighed.  He and his friend had been through this many times before already.

“Of course you can, Prasanth,” he said.  “All you have to do is talk to Lavanya for five minutes.  Five minutes.  I’m not asking you to marry her or anything.”

          “But…”  Prasanth persisted.

“I assure you, she won’t bite.”

          “But what if…”

“No ifs and buts about it,” Karthik snapped.  “Just go and do it!”

“Uh, can you come with me?  Please?”

“Prasanth, what part of ‘No’ don’t you understand?  Now go!”

And with that, he gave his timid friend a helpful little shove in the right direction.

Startled, Prasanth nearly fell flat on his face.  Fortunately, he managed to recover his balance in time.  He swallowed and started walking hesitantly toward Lavanya, looking back at his friend for encouragement from time to time.

“Go,” Karthik said.  “I believe in you!”

Prasanth murmured a prayer to the gods, steeled himself and continued walking.

His “target” sat by herself on the school bench.  She was reading the book “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.”

Prasanth’s face flushed crimson.  By the gods, he thought.  She’s beautiful…

He could feel his heart pounding in his chest.  It was now or never.

“Uh, hi,” he managed.

From his hiding place, Karthik let out a discreet whoop of joy.

Lavanya looked up from her book and smiled at him, which only caused his cheeks to redden further.  “Oh, hello,” she said.  “I’m sorry.  I was so busy reading that I didn’t notice you there.  Have we met before?”

“Uh, not really.  I just see you around school sometimes, that’s all.”

“I see,” Lavanya said.  “Come to think of it, I think I’ve seen you in the school hallway before.”  She blinked.  “Are you all right?  Your face is all red.”

Beads of sweat ran down Prasanth’s forehead.  He hurriedly wiped them away.  “I…uh…it’s just an allergy.  Pollen or something.  It’s nothing.”

“You’re a strange one,” she beamed, showing him the book she’d been reading.  “Have you read this book by John Gray?”

“Uh, no.  What’s it about?”

“Here,” she gestured.  “Please have a seat.  I’ll tell you all about it.”

He only too happily obliged.  Once seated, he let out a sigh of relief and risked a glance at his friend.

From his hiding place, Karthik gave his friend a thumbs-up sign.

Prasanth smiled. You were right.  Thanks.

A Blessing in Disguise ( Tamil Short Story)

A Blessing in Disguise

(Short story took place in London England) She had been sitting behind the wheel for the last hour.  Traffic was terrible and she had to call to cancel her meeting with a client explaining that the traffic was impossible, and she could take hours before reaching her destination.

Trying to be calm and collected, she hummed along with the song playing on her radio.  It was a hot day and the air conditioning in her car wasn’t working properly, hence, she could feel beads of sweat on her forehead.

Santhi is one of the top sales agents in her company, and the client she was supposed to meet was a prospective buyer.  He wasn’t only interested in buying their products, but he wanted a long-term arrangement to make them a steady supplier for a business he was putting up.

She decided to stop at a nearby restaurant and wait out the traffic.  Even if she got home late, it was a better alternative than wasting too much gasoline in traffic and getting stiff legs from driving.

She was quietly sipping her cold coffee when she heard a man ask if he could share a seat with her.  Realizing the restaurant was full perhaps because a lot of people opted to stay out of traffic, too, she agreed to share her table with the strange man.

“Thank you.”  The man said.  “I’m new in town, and I can’t believe traffic can get this bad here.”  He lightly said.

“Traffic at this time is not usually bad.”  Santhi replied.  “I’m Santhi, by the way.”

“Hi, my name’s Kannan.  Do you know of any place that’s quite affordable that I can stay at?”  He inquired.  “I’m afraid the apartment I rented out wouldn’t be ready for the next two weeks at least.”

As she gave suggestions on where he could stay and they discussed which one is the best place to stay in, they also made small talk about where he came from and what they both did for a living.

Before the night was over, they agreed to meet again the day after next for lunch in the same restaurant.

Santhi wasn’t looking for love when she met Kannan.  In fact, she has sworn off men after her last breakup.  It has been two years since that ugly breakup, and she never again considered dating.  But maybe Fate had other plans for her.  Maybe she wasn’t supposed to spend the rest of her life bitter and alone.

Whatever happens with this strange man, she’s willing to give love another try.

Is He Mine ( Tamil Short Story)

Is He Mine?

Abirami came running towards her husband, Rajan, “Wait.”

Rajan turned, an eyebrow raised in confusion.

“You left this,” Abirami pushed the small bag she was carrying to Rajan.

          “What is it?” Rajan asked.

“Open it when you get to the office,” she murmured before going back into their house.

When Rajan arrived at his office, he locked the door and stared at the little bag his wife gave him.  He wanted to know what it contained but was hesitant to open the package.  Sighing, he finally opened it.  Inside was pregnancy kit.  Perplexed, he looked at it to see that it contained two lines.  “Two lines?” he thought.  He then read the instructions at the back of the package and then stared in horror once more at the positive test pregnancy kit.  “That can’t be.”

Meanwhile, back at home, Abirami was waiting for a call from Rajan.  “Would he be pleased?  I know we talked about not having a baby yet, but I do hope he’s happy.”

          Then the phone suddenly rings.

Abirami grabbed it and answered breathlessly, “Hello?”

It was Rajan, “I won’t be coming home for dinner tonight,” then he abruptly cut off the communication, almost slamming the phone down.

Crushed, Abirami didn’t know what to think.  “I guess he really didn’t want a baby after all,” she thought sadly.  All day, she can’t help but think of what to do next.  Since they had talked about not having a baby yet, she was afraid that her husband will not like the thought of having a wee one.  Abirami couldn’t sleep, her thoughts on the unborn baby and her husband.  When Rajan did get home, it was in the early hours of the morning.  He was reeking of alcohol, obviously drunk, yet he never looked so sober.  Then he sat down beside his wife on the bed and said in a very calm voice, “It’s not my baby.  I’m sorry.”

“What?!  No.  It’s yours.  You’re the only man I’ve ever been with.  You’re my husband, for Pete’s sake!” she cried out angrily.

“I’m infertile,” he admitted, “I can never bear you or any woman a child.”

“The baby is yours,” she said adamantly.  Then she decided, at that very same moment, to leave him.  “If you can’t accept our baby, then we can’t be with you, too.”

Rajan let her leave without even trying to stop her.

Five miserable years later, Rajan chanced upon Abirami with her son at the mall.  When he looked closely, the boy had a dark pigmentation near his right ear.  It was in the shape of a clover.  His hand automatically went to his own right ear, touching his own birthmark.

No!!!  Five lost years!
